この作品は、九州阿蘇の南にある幣立神宮という神社にお参りしたときの印象を元にして作りました。この神社は、古来から天孫降臨の宮といわれているそうですが、行ってみると、まさにそのとおりでした。地の深くから垂直に立ち昇るエネルギー、また、天の高みから垂直に降りてくるエネルギー……人工衛星と地表とをエレベータでつなぐ計画があるそうですが、まさにそんな感じです。
画面の下の方に見える山は、阿蘇山です。阿蘇山は、有史以前の度重なる噴火のために、現在は山頂部が陥没してカルデラを形成していますが、本来のかたちは富士山のような美しい成層火山であったと思われ、高さも現在よりはるかに高い山だったのでしょう。ちなみに、富士山を祀る神社は浅間神社ですが、浅間を訓読みにすれば「アサマ」となり、「A-S」で「アソ」に通じます。今も噴火を続けている浅間山もそうですが、もしかしたら、こういう美しい山のことを、古代には「A-S」音で呼んでいたのかもしれません。伊勢の朝熊山も、火山ではありませんが、音からは、関連がありそうに思えます。

I made this work based on my impression when I prayed at the Shinto shrine called Heitate-Jingu in the south of Mt. Aso in Kyushu. This Shinto shrine was said to be a shrine of the advent of the descendant of the Sun-Goddess from ancient times, and was right, when I went and felt. The energy that from deep ground goes up perpendicularly, the energy that descending from the high place of the sky perpendicularly again……There seems to be a plan to link the surface of the earth to the man-made satellite by an elevator, and is right such a feeling.
You can see the mountain which is like Mt. Fuji at bottom of the picture. That is Mt. Aso. Mt. Aso is forming a caldera now for prehistoric repeated eruption and the mountaintop part was lost, but it is thought that the original form was a beautiful stratovolcano such as Mount Fuji. The height would be much than that of now, maybe. By the way, a Shinto shrine to enshrine Mount Fuji is "Sengen(浅間)" Shrine, but it is "Asama" if I pronounce "Sengen" in another way, and it links "Aso" in "A-S". Mount Asama of Nagano that continues erupting is also so maybe, possibly might call such a beautiful mountain by "A-S" sound in the ancient times. Mt. Asama of Ise is not a volcano but, from its pronunciation, seems to have some relations.
