I held a private exhibition at an art gallery of Nagoya in 1999. The title of the exhibition is called "SUBSTANCITE", this word composed "substance" and "site". I set up a film made by vinyl chloride around the altitude of 60 centimeters on the floor of the art gallery. The visitor enters using a board which works in casters, lying on his/her back, from the entrance. He/She holds a wooden stick with the rubber in both hands, and he/she pushes the floor with these sticks and advances before. On a vinyl chloride film, various images are printed by heat transcription. Slight light shines from upper-side and lets those images rise in visitor's site. I understood by this exhibition that, it is very important that a person can watch a work from favorite distance. The distance from a person to the images is fixed forcibly in this case. In addition, the field of vision of a person is limited. A certain people feels very uncomfortably at this forced state. ”Hard!, painful!, not to want to see twice!”,this is the words that a person who saw my work said. I felt that I really am sorry.
