全質変化／トランサブスタンシエイション

昔、英語の中で一番長い単語はなあに？というクイズがあって、その答がこの言葉だった。日本語では、「全質変化」といったり「化体」としたり、訳は一定していないようである。
新訳聖書に出てくる最後の晩餐のシーンで、キリストがパンをとって、「これは私の身体である」といい、葡萄酒を「私の血である」と語った。これにちなんで、カトリックのミサでは、信者限定でこのパンと葡萄酒の「聖体拝領」が行われるわけだが、信者さんたちは、パンが本当にキリストの身体になり、葡萄酒が本当にキリストの血に変化するのを体験するのだという。うーん……信者でない私にとっては、どう見てもただのパンと葡萄酒なんですが……もし、本当に肉や血に変化したのを食べるんだったら食人？　いやいや、人でなく神だからいいということなんでしょうが……
イエズス会の創設者のイグナチウス・ロヨラさんは、本当にこの奇跡を体験して、目覚めてしまったそうな……なんか、すごいです。ちょっと勝てない気分……。

Transubstantiation

In old days, there was a quiz. "What is the word that is the longest in English?" The answer was this word.
In the scene of the Last Supper in the New Testament, Christ distributed the bread to his disciples and talked "This is my body", about the wine, he talked "This is my blood". For this historical fact, in the Catholic mass, "Holy Communion" are performed only for believers. And they experienced, "bread and wine are transformed to body and blood of Christ really ".
